Ruby answers his questions here. What is your background? Where were you raised? What education level did you reach? What other jobs have you held? I went through high school, college and then onto uni where I studied social sciences. I worked weekends at a cafe during high school and worked with some community organisations part-time during uni and now.
I was always curious about it and once I started uni, I decided I wanted a job that would fit around my study commitments and my lifestyle. I didn't want to spend all of my spare time working a job that I hated just to make ends meet.
At that time, brothels in Tasmania were legal so I contacted two of the brothels in Hobart, had an interview at each of those and chose the one that I wanted to work in.
I suppose that's different from other jobs; instead of the employer choosing you, you choose the workplace. Since then, I have been able to work in positions in community organisations, particularly with people with disabilities which is rewarding. I also feel that sex work is rewarding. What are your thoughts on the Pretty Woman syndrome, that assumption that women are vulnerable and need to be saved from sex work?
That idea is problematic for a whole bunch of reasons. That assumption denies that women have agency and the ability to choose how they will work and the work they will do. There is a big lack of understanding in the flexibility and freedom that the sex industry offers. Yeah, totally. I talk to clients on the phone before I meet them and see what their interests are and to make sure we have enough in common to get along well.
